Day 5: July 13, 2017

Hello from the icegang of Iceland! Tak (that means thank you in icelandic) for keeping up with our blog. We started with the breakfast in the hotel, and headed out for an adventure (a nice drive, spent napping, of course).

We started out the adventure at the basalt columns (Gerouberg). We got to climb up some muddy trails, everyone got their hands dirty, but we survived. The top was glorious, the clouds were so close it seemed like we could touch them.

Look at those lovely columns!

Next we went on a hike to Eldbord. It was a long, muddy trek to get there (with a sheep ladder), but the view from the top was well worth it. After the fantastic view at the top of the crater, we climbed a baby cinder cone (don't get us wrong, it was smaller than the other, but it was still an effort). A group member recorded around 14,000 steps round trip.

Next, the icegang took the coach to Ytri Tunga to see some icelandic seals. Though the rocks were treacherous, the seals were flubby enough to make up for the danger (there was not much danger, but the kelp was slimy). The seals posed for our pictures in the sun, as creatures of beauty do.

Nearly at the end of our adventure on the Snaefellsbaer Peninsula, we visited Budir (a church, cemetery, and nature path). The the path was breathtaking with its fine grass and colorful wild flowers (but be warned, there were many hidden holes and cracks in the ground). There was sand which was analyzed by one of the teachers who determined that the sand was made of seashells, so the grains were very colorful.

Finally, we went to Arnarstapi to see horizontal rock formations (usually these are found vertically). There was a hike around the rim of a giant caldera from an ancient volcano, and to quote Mr. Carmichael: "The creation of the Earth is a constant battle between the creation of mountains and the erosion of land.'

We enjoyed a pizza dinner.

Adios de la icegang,
Laura, Anjana, Mary, Saumya, & Marissa

P.S. Happy Birthday, Sam.
